frequently asked questions
Will I be expected to lie down on a couch and talk about my childhood? No! This is not how counselling is conducted. We have comfortable seating and you can talk about whatever you need to talk about. Will you tell me what to do with my life? No, counselling is not about telling you what to do or giving you answers. Our aim is to provide you with the right environment to be able to talk and to help you work things out for yourself, with a little help the counsellor guiding you in the right direction. What is counselling and how will counselling help me?Coming to counselling can be very daunting at first, you may feel you don’t know what you are letting yourself in for, but basically it is just having someone to talk to about anything that is troubling you. Your counsellor will be able to support you and help you take those first steps into creating positive changes in your life and help you to cope with situations you now feel you cannot cope with. Counsellor and client work together to create these changes and help you to move forward with clear insights into yourself. The hardest part is making that first contact with a counsellor, but making it could be the first step to changing the direction your life is heading in.How long do sessions last? Each counselling session is 50 minutes long. To get the best out of counselling, sessions should be once a week. This is because making a regular commitment will give you a better understanding of the things which are causing you stress and a chance to understand and resolve your issues. Can I bring someone into the counselling room with me?Counselling is a one to one service. It will just be you and your counsellor. We have a comfortable seating area where people can wait.I do offer couples counselling. How many times will I need to come and see the counsellor? We will initially offer 6 sessions, but this is entirely individual. Some people need more and of course, some less than 6. We will review and agree the number of sessions as and when necessary. How much do sessions cost? The first session will be at the reduced rate of £25, following sessions will be £35. We offer reduced rates for students, OAP’s and unemployed, please contact me for more information. What appointment times do you offer? My first appointment is 10am and the last 7pm, Monday to Friday. On a Saturday, first appointment is 10am and the last is 3pm.Your appointment will generally be at the same time, on the same day each week, but we do appreciate some people work shifts and we offer some flexibility to accommodate this. What if I have to cancel a session? We have a cancellation policy for all clients. We require 24 hours notice if you have to cancel an appointment, or we will have to charge for the missed appointment. This will be payable to your next session, or you will be invoiced if it is your last session. What if I don’t wish to end my therapy? You do of course have the right to end therapy at anytime, but we would ask that you come for one final session to review our work and say goodbye.
